Co-operatives are one of the oldest and most sustainable ownership models for business and have been used consistently in the UK for more than 150 years. There are well over 6,000 independent co-operative businesses in the UK with a combined turnover of over £37 billion. They work in all parts of the economy from health to housing, farming to football, transport to telecoms. These diverse enterprises share common values and principles.

All co-operatives are owned and controlled by their members, and they work to internationally agreed principles such as democracy, participation, autonomy, education and concern for community.
